My name is Rhoda Smith and I have taught in the De Queen and Lockesburg schools since 1978. I am a graduate of Kirbyville High School & Lamar University. I am married to Rodney Smith and we will soon be celebrating our 30th anniversary.
The kindergarten students who come to the computer lab will work on an online website called "Starfall" and "More Starfall".
Quoting the Starfall site, "Starfall.com opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read with phonics. Our systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice, is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children."
Students also have free access to Starfall.com on home computers. There is also a Starfall app available on Itunes for a $2.99 charge if you have an Iphone or Ipad.
In addition to running the K-hall lab, I am the yearbook advisor for the De Queen Primary and Elementary campuses. We take pictures throughout the year and make a combined yearbook for both schools. We take orders for the yearbook in the spring which will be $18.00. We will send notes home so we can take orders for them in the early spring so the yearbooks can be printed and delivered by the last day of school.
